The Cybermen  Reply with quote

Good. Ok. I wanted to get around to doing a section on all (non-Timelord) baddies including The Daleks and The Cybermen but since you've asked well I'll get a little ahead of my other self and give you a little taster shall we say. So here Goes...

The Cybermen, aboriginals of the Planet Mondas, were a result of great advances in cybernetic engineering originally conceived to provide spare parts for mamed humans. Missing or badly damaged bodily parts could then be replaced with cybernetic organs, etc. All such human research in this field took place on the Planet Mondas which at some point in our unbelieveably distant past shared an orbit with earth. Somewhere along the line research became so advanced that that a new being could be formed from barely recogniseable human remains, a kind of cybernetic man or cybernetic human. This new cyberman begat an urge to reproduce itself by assimilating human body parts and eventually entire humans thus creating a whole new generation of cybermen who assimilated all the humans that lived there and became the dominant race of the planet Mondas.

The cybermen were all linked together as the same consciousness and as a collective intelligence were able to do some pretty brilliant science themselves.

(I should like to point out that all this assimilation and collective consciousness business was going on a good 25-30 years before Gene Roddenberry ever thought of inventing the BORG. Just thought I'd throw that one in there.)

Presumably, when the cybermen assimilated all the researchers on Mondas the technology was then lost to humans and to earth which is why no such advances in cybernetic research were ever made available to us. One of the cybermen's own advances, on the road to perfection, was to eliminate all forms of disease and emotion. Thus they are emotionless and pretty much invincible to human weaponry and germs. Cybermen are vulnerable however to their own weaponry and that of other advanced alien civilisations. They are not too good on radiation either, their outer layer would appear to be some form of radiation proof skin/apparel and if you can get through that with a few microwaves you may suceed in making the cyberman somewhat dizzy. Cybermen are strangely highly allergic to gold and if you can penetrate a cyberman with some of this precious metal you will certainly kill it. The respiratory grid located on the cyberman's chest is the best spot to aim for as the quickest route to poisoning the B******.

At some point in the cybermen's history (Possibly after a war with planet earth, or possibly just after a fit of boredom and craving to travel) The cybermen scooped out Mondas' core and replaced it with a remote control spatial navigation system so that they could jump out of earth's orbit and go and explore new worlds and assimilate other beings. This they did throughout eons presumably with great success up until 1986 when the planets core ran out of energy and began to die. The cybermen then saw their chance to return to planet earth and usurp the energy from its former twin and use it to continue their travels and possibly invade and conquer it with time left to spare for a few assimilations into the bargain.

Unfortunately for them, the Doctor's first incarnation was on an expedition to antartica at the time who in a frail and failing body manages to defeat them and watch Mondas explode before falling to the floor of the tardis and regenerating. (How unlucky is that?)

Somehow, a few cybermen managed to survive hidden away on the Planet Telos in suspended animation. Possibly foreseeing their own distruction they stored a few cybermen in frozen conditions deep beneath Telos' surface, biding their time until some intelligent race could decipher the codes used to open their "Tombs" and release the few remaining cybermen together with their controller (Kinda like a Boss Cyberman).
Since their reawakening they have adopted Telos as their new home planet but often try to develop or steal time travel technology so that they can return and avert Mondas' destruction, something which the Doctor has so far been able to prevent. As it is unlikely that they will be able to rescue Mondas from its cruel destiny they are also prone to considering the invasion and domination of Mondas' twin, our beloved planet earth. If they were to gain control of the earth at some point in the future they would most certainly replace its core and wander off into the voids of space assimilating, killing and generally barging about.

They are for all intents and purposes mortal enemies of the Doctor and every bit as ruthless and as dangerous as the Daleks

There is a difference between liking K9 and loving K9. And I am the first one.

I do not love a robot dog. Then again, K9 is better than Jack.

Interesting theory. I wouldn't put it past Auntie Beeb to hype things up like that. There is however the odd testimony here and there to such phenomena. Some people (now grown adults) confess to the hiding bit. I was more of a gripping the edge of the seat, white knuckles and all.

To understand it though, one ought to take into account that the first time that the Daleks were introduced to our television screen was in 1960's Black and white. People, especially children were not used to Sci-fi in their living room. And if any aliens were about they were usually humanoid in form and generally aimed at an adults imagination, definately somewhat less vivid than that of a 5 year old child. The fact that they were absolutely ruthless killing machines with not a second thought for anything outside of extermination is and was then rather scary.

Having said that though, there has always been a branch of loyal fandom which empathises with your train of thought that the Daleks are laughable and in fact that the cybermen were a lot more frightening, or indeed the Master for that matter. Their general favourite phrase is/was, how can you be scared of a dalek, a pepperpot that can't even climb up a flight of stairs?

This of course had to be done away with. As we know Daleks do actually evolve and have gotten over the stairs bit. The originals were limited to a single city on their home planet of Skaro. They could then only manouever over a magnetic surface usig static electricty for example. Thus a swift blanket between them and the floor served as insulation and was enough to neutralise the vile creature.

Reportedly some of the most frightening moments of doctor who are when the daleks evolve to overcome such weaknesses:- William Hartnell goes into a fit of overacting as the first dalek slides up a ramp from under the thames. The overacting was frightening enough but the thought that the Daleks were no longer limited to their home planet was terrifying. Likewise, in Rememberance of the Daleks, many Dalek sceptics were once again scared by Sylvester Mc Coys reaction to watching a dalek persue him up a flight of stairs for the first time.

Anyway enough rambling for now.
