Ok. Certainly wouldn't want to knock anyone's choice of Doctor.
If there are people out there who have not seen William Hartnell in action then I should like to recommend the stories, "The Dalek's Master Plan." "The Celestial Toymaker" and "the Tenth Planet" and most certainly "An Unearthly child". At the beginning of the Five Doctors anniversary special there is also a snippet of William Hartnell at his best when he gives his moving farewell speech to Susan. This speech is a monologue (very hard to pull off) and was seen as a prophecy by many fans after the show was cancelled be the BBC 15 years ago (or thereabouts).
Under no circumstances whatsoever should your first Hartnell episode be "Gunfight at the Ok Coral" So if you have just a little time then it should be An unearthly child but if you are willing to sit through an Epic in black and white then have a go at The Dalek's Master Plan. The shenannigans between the Doctor and the Monk are excellent; timelord mischeviousness at its best!
For those of you a bit out of touch with John Pertwee I would recommend almost anything except The Green Death. Carnaval of Monsters is a good starting point. To be honest the first Pertwee episodes where the Doctor is stuck on earth with no escape, although vital and compulsory whovian material, might be a bit hard to swallow as an introduccion. If you do want to have a go at being stuck on earth try "Terror of the Autons". "The Three Doctors" tenth anniversary special is a definate must and Pertwee plays it tremendously without letting himself be overshadowed by Patrick Troughton, which in itself is a feat only manageable by a class A actor.

Hey Folks, Is it time to rerun this thread again with Mr. Tennant as an option??
Just a thought maybe he has overshadowed some previous ideas
