The Dr's Human Side, and his family...  Reply with quote

here is a thread to discuss the human side of the doctor and his family....

so far i have only really worked out parts of the backstory of the doctor being part human. this is all just really info i have got from the made for tv movie. The Master in this movie when looking into the eye of harmony see the doctor eye, and recognizes it as being human. this makes sense because as we know timelords eyes can glow, but the doctor's never do.

so if any of you guys know:

the nature of the doctors birth?

the backstory about his ganddaughter?

and anything related to the dr's human side, and his familyi would appreciated you posting it here...

good day

i said GOOD DAY!

Errr. Ok the Half human question only crops up in the TV movie, and is dodgy territory in fandom- It was brought into the TVM to try to help new audiences relate to the character more, which at the same time succeeded in "alienating" some of the die hard fans who have always revelled in the fact that the Doctor is not human at all. Even if the The Doctor is half human, all references to his family background would tend to hack away at the whole Mystery which shrouds our favorite character. The name of the show is after all Doctor "WHO" if we are to answer the question of 'Who' then presumably the series would lose a great deal of its appeal.

That said, in the same TVM it is claimed by the Doctor himself that his Mother's side of the family is Human. In another scene he declares that he has a memory of being with his father in Gallifrey. If the TVM is anything to go by, all things then seem to suggest that his father was a Time Lord and his mother a Human.

We know that the doctor's first incarnation had a granddaughter Susan. The original series was only meant to run for six weeks so I dont think that the writers were aware of the implications of the Doctor having a timelord/lady Granddaughter. It is entirely possible that Susan being the Doctors granddaughter was the only way that the 1960's BBC could justify an old fart travelling/cohabiting with a beautiful, intelligent 15 year old girl and still call it children's entertainment.

The Doctor having a granddaughter of course would implicate that somewhere in time the doctor also has a partner and a son or daughter, who in all honesty should have been the ones responsible for looking after Susan's education. So where are they? No one knows. They are, in the series, never ever mentioned.

Susan of course fell in love and stayed on earth. Whether she started a family there or not remains to be seen.

For the TVM a number of scripts were commisioned and only one got chosen by producer Phillip Hinchcliffe. A runner up script just pipped at the post was to be a story about the Doctor travelling through time searching for his father. Perhaps it will be made some time in the future, who knows?

The remaining questions about the Doctor's Family have been attacked on paper rather than in the series. Several claims have been made in a new adventures book which I believe is called the "nth" Doctor. The claims have been carefully woven so as to tie in with the TV series but I feel that they kind of spoil it a little and am slightly reluctant to reveal them here. I think that fans should make a healthy distintion between what goes on in the stories that make it to television and those that do not. Otherwise the paradoxes will be too much and put a strain on our poor Doctor.

As far as the TV series goes we know next to nothing about the doctor's family background, or indeed about any timelords family. In Gallifreyan culture it is not at all certain that any kind of importance is given to family and or the nurturing of youth in a family unit. We know that timelords are sent to school (the Prydon Academy) but none of the other Timelords in the series (to my knowledge) have ever had a mention of family. Even more worrying is that in all the episodes that have taken place on Gallifrey, no timelord children have ever been seen. Maybe families and children are only important to us humans who are "always seeing patterns in things that aren't there". ........ Just a thought as Joel might say......

dude. again i am stunned by your knowledge and insight into all things who,if any of you have questions about classic who do yourself a favour and ask der martin.

i think it is a shame that the TVM was not more accurate, i wonder if this is due to the American involvement. your thoughts?

did you know the Dr got 51% on his 2nd attempt to graduate the academy? it's a recurring theme in the Dr Who stories that the Dr is slightly dim.
